The truth about SEO and meta tags
In the earlier days, when the internet was still new, meta tags were everything. They have been important in helping search engines decide what the site is about and how the site ranks in their search results. When databases were smaller and more manageable, this meta tag provided a quick and easy way to see which keywords were important on the site. At the time, meta tags were king. Many SEO services can get websites high due to the presence of meta tags.
With the internet growing more than expected, there has been fierce competition in trying to reach the top search engine rankings. SEO services that were not able to rank their sites through fair means resorted to unfair means. In an effort to bring traffic to their site, they abused the system by incorporating completely useless and irrelevant keywords into their meta tags.
As a result, Google and most other major search engines pay little or no attention to meta tags. What is given more importance is the content within the website pages. Words in meta tags are still noted by a few engines, but they are used more as secondary complements to the actual content and title tag of a web page.
So, should you or should you not use meta keyword tags anymore? It certainly wouldn't hurt to use it. Search engines use many different factors to determine site rankings, so it makes sense to use meta tags in conjunction with any other acceptable and legitimate technology available. At best, it increases your chances of ranking higher and there is no downside to it unless you increase your page widely with irrelevant keywords.
If you still intend to use meta tags, first write your content based on related keywords and then create your title tag and meta description tag using the same keywords.
