SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and a beginner is someone who is new to something. So if you are a beginner in SEO, these basic terms will help you.


A few years ago no one would have heard of the term SEO. And now we have pages of terms related to it. The Internet has quickly created new industries and thus has produced new words and phrases.


Use this glossary of terms as a quick introduction to the SEO language.


IP

Every internet user and every server has a digital address - it looks like this 123.45.67.890.


keyword

Keyword in the word used in the search query. In SEO, web pages are usually optimized for specific keywords. Accurate keyword targeting is essential to effective search engine optimization.


Keyword Density

A measure of the percentage of keywords on the page. When keyword density is artificially inflated, it is often referred to as keyword stuffing.


Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)

Latent semantic indexing, uses statistical algorithms to retrieve related documents even when none of the queried words are involved.


Manual submission

The process of manually submitting a web page to a search engine or directory rather than using a submission program or a submission service. Like offering a hand.


natural splicing

Describes hypertext links on websites that are part of the text content and that link to expanded information or add additional information to the topic.

PPC

Pay per click. An online advertising payment system where an advertiser only pays for an ad when it is clicked. So an advertisement may be on a page that receives 1000 visitors, but if there are only 6 clicks, the advertiser pays for only 6.


classification

Indicates where the web page is included in the search results for a particular query. For example, if one of your web pages is listed at position 7 for "cat", your page is said to have a position of 7 for that term.


interconnection

It is basically a swap link. I will put a link to your page on my page if I give a link from your page.


page rank

Google's measure of page popularity.


SERP (S)

Search engine results page(s). When you search for a term in a search engine it returns a page full of responses and that is the SERP.


SEO

Search Engine Optimization. This is a collective term used to describe activities aimed at improving the search engine ranking of a web page.


Site Map

A map of your site. Your sitemap contains links to every page of your site that may help spiders index all of your pages.


spider

An internal search engine program that travels across the Internet and follows links from page to page and site to site. As it "crawls", it collects information from the sites it visits and then this information is stored in the search engine's database for use in the search engine's query results.

Server Side Inclusion (SSI)

It is a form of HTML command that is kept off the page and onto the server. It allows the webmaster to enter the same thing on many pages and allows them to make changes to that thing in just one place. For example a navbar might happen on every page, but if it's set up as an SSI, if a change is required, the webmaster only needs to change it once and it will be changed automatically on every page.


unique visitor

Used to describe a single person visiting the site. One person may visit the site multiple times, so log files usually show more visits than unique visitors.


URL

URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator or Universal Resource Locator. It is the unique Internet address that must be available on each site in order to be located. For example www.discover-voip.info.
